Making the Right Choice
There are many types of sealers available. A brief summary on a sealer’s function, size, speed, and heating elements will help you determine the right sealer for your needs.
Function:
There are mainly 2 types of sealers, an impulse heat and a direct heat sealer.
The impulse heat sealer is used for any thermoplastic material such as a poly bag that requires a lower temperature. It can also be used to seal poly –coated materials.
On the other hand, the direct heat sealer provides a higher temperature on heated jaws, so it is mostly used for cellophane and other thicker thermoplastic or poly-coated materials.
Other functions to be considered in selecting the right sealer are cutter units, vacuum formation and gas purging.
Size:
The size of sealer to use depends on the width of the material to be sealed. For easy handling, add one inch to the width of material to get the size of sealer needed.
Speed:
The portable sealer is lightweight, handy, very versatile and does not need a big work area. The
sizes are limited.
The hand sealer is the simplest and most economical. The sealing bar is manually lowered. This sealer is available from 4" to 40" Approximately 6 to 20 packages can be sealed per
minute.
The foot sealer provides a faster sealing operation. The sealing bar is pedestal controlled, leaving two hands free for faster operation. The foot sealer is available from 12" to 35".
Approximately 8 to 20 packages can be sealed per minute.
The auto sealer provides the fastest sealing operation. The unit has a continuous automatic motion at a pre-set time cycle or it can be placed in a manual mode and actuated by a foot
switch for each intermittent cycle. Auto sealers are available from 12"to 24". Approximately 20-50 packages can be sealed per minute.
The continuous band sealer provides very fast sealing operation with unlimited length.
There are several models available with different features, such as horizontal seal head, vertical seal head, tilting seal head, left or right side feed, gas purging, coding and imprinting.
Heating Elements for Impulse Heat Sealers:
The heating element comes in round or flat. In most sealers, the round and flat wire can be interchanged.
The round wire is mainly used for cut and seal. There is no seam left.
Depending on the width of the flat wire element, sealers are available in 2-3mm, 5mm , 8mm, or 10 mm. Some sealers are equipped with two heating elements for faster heat penetration,
ideal for sealing thicker materials.
Standard Features of our Impulse Heat Sealers
The sealers are of metal construction, the body is formed out of a rugged cast aluminum and the pivot is all steel. The sealers are of industrial quality and built to last.
Most sealers are equipped with plug-in electronic timer and built in micro-switch. No warm-up time is needed. Power is used only when the sealing bar activates the micro-switch. The
variable timer let you seal various types and thickness of plastic films. A signal light and beeping sound come on to let the operator know the heat cycle is completed and the seal is done.
The number in the model number usually indicates the size of the sealer in mm; so a 200 is an 8"and a 1000 is a 40". The letter in the model number is used to designate the manufacturer
and type of sealer, such as H for hand sealer, and A for auto sealer. Divide mm by 25.4 to get its equivalence in inches.

DIFFERENCES IN IMPULSE SEALERS  

Making the Right Choice
There are many types of sealers available. A brief summary on a sealer’s function, size, speed, and heating elements will help you determine the right sealer for your needs.
Function:
There are mainly 2 types of sealers, an impulse heat and a direct heat sealer.

The impulse heat sealer is used for any thermoplastic material such as a poly bag that requires a lower temperature. It can also be used to seal poly–coated materials. Our impulse sealers with a 2mm
wide seal can seal together two sheets of plastic up to 6 mil in thickness (that's 12 mil total thickness.) Some of the wider 5mm sealers can seal together up to 8 mil in thickness (16 mil total.)
On the other hand, the direct heat sealer or constant heat sealer provides a higher temperature on heated jaws, so it is mostly used for cellophane and other thicker thermoplastic or poly-coated
materials.
Other functions to be considered in selecting the right sealer are if you need a cutter, if you need to vacuum seal and/or gas purging.

The size of sealer to use depends on the width of the material to be sealed. For easy handling, add one inch to the width of material to get the size of sealer needed.

Types & Speeds:

•Portable Sealers: lightweight, handy, very versatile and does not need a big work area. They are fairly quick to operate but the sizes are limited.
•Hand Sealers: the simplest and most economical type of sealer. The sealing bar is manually lowered. Hand sealers are available from 4" to 40" Approximately 6-20 packages can be sealed per
minute. These sealers look like a large stapler!
•Foot Sealers: provide a faster sealing operation. The sealing bar is pedestal controlled, leaving two hands free for faster operation. Sealer is available from 12" to 35". Approximately 8-20 packages
can be sealed per minute.
•Auto Sealers: provide a very fast sealing operation. Automatic sealers have a continuous automatic motion at a pre-set time cycle or they can be placed in a manual mode and actuated by a foot
switch for each intermittent cycle. Sealer is available from 12" to 24". Approximately 20-50 packages can be sealed per minute.
•Continuous Band Sealers: provide very fast sealing operation with unlimited length. There are several models available with different features, such as horizontal seal head, vertical seal head, tilting
seal head, left or right side feed, gas purging, coding and imprinting.
•Vacuum Sealers: remove the air from a package as well as seal it. There are several different types available with such as chamber vacuum machines, retractable nozzle vacuum machines and
home type machines.

Heating Elements for Impulse Heat Sealers:

The heating element comes in round or flat. In most sealers, the round and flat wire can be interchanged. The flat wires are used to seal plastic bags or tubing. The round wire is mainly used for cut
and seal on shrink bags/film. There is very little seam left. Impulse sealers are available in round wire, 2mm, 3mm, 5mm , 8mm, or 10mm. A wider seals means a better seal so if seal integrity is very
important to you, choose a sealer with at least a 5mm wide seal. A good example would be a food application where you need an air tight or liquid tight seal. Round wires are used in cut-and-seal
applications such as shrink film, shrink bags and poly tubing. Double impulse sealers are equipped with two heating elements (top and bottom) for faster heat penetration which makes them ideal for
sealing thicker materials or gusseted bags.

Most impulse sealers are equipped with plug-in electronic timer and built in micro-switch. No warm-up time is needed. Power is used only when the sealing bar activates the micro-switch. The

to set the timer to the lowest possible number that gives you a good seal. That will maximize the life of the heating element and the PTFE Non Stick covers.
The number in the model number usually indicates the size of the sealer in mm; so a 200 is approximately 8" and a 1000 is approximately 40". Divide mm by 25.4 to get its equivalence in inches.
Easy to Operate Simply place a bag between the sealing bars, press down and release.
90 Day Warranty Most sealers come with a 90 day parts and labor warranty except on the usable parts. Sealers must be returned prepaid to Doug Care Equipment or our authorized service agency
for warranty service.


Replacement Parts Kits
Impulse sealers will require new heating elements and PTFE Non Stick covers and adhesives from time to time. All our sealers come with a manufactures kit which varies by make and is usually
listed in the sealer description. Our replacement kits fit most makes of impulse sealers and are available separately or as additional kits with the sealer which we are in the process of adding to our
site. The kits will have elements, PTFE Non Stick covers and PTFE Non Stick adhesive strips (goes between the element and the metal machine). To see more info on these kits follow these links:

The exact seal length on any of our sealers is actually in centimeters. To determine the length in inches use the first two numbers in the model number for the length in centimeters then convert with
the chart below.


10 cm = 3.9"
15 cm = 5.9"
20 cm = 7.9"

28 cm = 11.0"
30 cm = 11.8"

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
Most makes of impulse sealers consist of very similar parts and work in exactly the same manner. If you are having trouble with one take a look at the following suggestions - you should be able to
get most machines up and running in short order! The most common problem with impulse sealers not sealing is a broken seal element. See item number 1.


1.Check element and PTFE Non Stick condition. Careful! Sometimes the element will be broken under the PTFE Non Stick cover but it will look whole. If not sure, remove PTFE Non Stick cover to
check! These hints work for almost all sealers, including hand, foot and auto sealers.
◦Element: This is the wire (flat or round) that heats up to seal or cut the bag/film. It must be intact! Replace by fitting an eyelet on end of new element over the mounting spring hook on one end and
then carefully placing the other eyelet end on the opposite mounting spring hook. Mounting springs can flex to fit a slightly shorter or longer element by bending the spring slightly. Be sure bottom
PTFE Non Stick adhesive strip is in good condition before replacing element! How to correctly measure an impulse sealer element.
◦PTFE Non Stick Adhesive: This is the narrower piece of PTFE Non Stick with an adhesive backing that is stuck on the metal sealer under the element. It should extend past the seal area 1/2" on
either side because it is the barrier between the metal machine and the metal heating element. Some makes of sealer use a thin piece of plastic which can be replaced by the PTFE Non Stick adhesive
strip in our replacement kits.
◦PTFE Non Stick Cover: The PTFE Non Stick cover that goes over the heating element must be whole to prevent the plastic bags or film from sticking to the element. Replace or adjust to a non-
burned/cut area when burnt or cut. If you are sealing/cutting a thicker plastic material (higher amount of heat) you may go through a lot of PTFE Non Stick covers. This is normal! We have PTFE Non
Stick cover material in economical rolls for this reason.
2.Listen for click from microswitch when pushing bar down. This click should occur right before the upper bar comes into contact with the lower. If there is no click try the following:
◦Hand Sealer: Slightly bend metal switch lever so that when arm of sealer is brought down, the lever makes contact with microswitch and a click can be heard.
◦Foot Sealer: Small bolt for limit switch must be tightened as needed to make contact with the microswitch.
◦Auto Sealers: A 3.5" screw that is mounted on upper jaw must be loosened so that it will make contact with microswitch which is mounted on left side of hinge bracket.
3.Mounting Spring: Make sure that the spring the element mounts on is intact. Replace if damaged. I don't have these springs on the parts list but we can probably help you if needed.
4.Timer Light: The light on the timer should come on briefly when the seal bar is brought down for sealing. If it does not come on, the timer PC board probably needs replacing. Like the mounting
springs we don't have the PC boards listed but call us, we may be able to help.

Sealer Maintenance

Most sealer issues result from lack of maintenance. After using a sealer for 1,000-5,000 sealers,
it is normal for the heating element to break. The number of seals will vary on the timer setting. The sealer's Teflon adhesive serves as a
barrier between the heating element and the sealer's body.
When the heating element has burned through the bottom PTFE adhesive cover and arced on the sealer's body, the element will break. This
can also result in damage to a sealer's timer. When replacing the heating element, you MUST also replace the bottom PTFE  adhesive cover.
When a user does not do this, the heating element will break earlier than usual.
